We realize that many homeowners need to familiarize themselves with measuring for window shades. Some may find the task intimidating, but precision can be achieved with proper guidance and tools.

Professional measurements and installations are always an option, but here are instructions for the DIYers.

The First Step of How To Measure for Window Shades

Gather the necessary tools before you begin measuring for your new window shades. You'll need:

  • Metal tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Notepad to jot down your measurements
  • Have a step ladder on hand if your windows are out of reach

Once your tools are ready, you can decide whether you want an inside or outside mount.

Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount Window Shade Measurements

Do you want an inside or an outside mount for your window shades? Inside mounts fit inside the window frame, while outside mounts are installed on the wall or window trim surrounding the window. Each option offers its own set of benefits.

Inside Mount

To measure for an inside mount, measure the window width at the top, middle, and bottom. Take the smallest of these measurements to ensure a proper fit. Next, measure the window height from the top of the inside frame to the window sill in three places: left, middle, and right. Again, take the smallest measurement.

  • Pros: Sleek appearance, allows for unobstructed views.
  • Cons: Limited light blockage, may not cover irregular window frames fully.

Outside Mount

For an outside mount, measure the window width from the outermost edges of the trim or desired coverage area. Add extra inches on each side for light blockage and privacy. Then, measure the height from the top of the window frame to the desired endpoint, whether above or below the window sill.

  • Pros: Maximum light control, covers window frames.
  • Cons: Less streamlined, may require more space.

Precision Matters for Window Shade Measurements

Window shade measurements are all about accuracy. Even the slightest miscalculation can result in shades that don't fit properly or leave gaps. Take your time and double-check your measurements while working.

When measuring for window shades, always round down to the nearest eighth of an inch to account for slight variations. It's better to have shades slightly smaller than your window opening than ones too big. Also, consider whether you want your shades to sit flush with the window frame or overlap slightly for better light control.

Professional Measuring and Installation Services

Many companies offer measuring and installation services if you need clarification on taking accurate measurements or prefer to leave the task to the experts. Professional installers have the experience and knowledge to ensure your window shades fit perfectly and function as they should.

When hiring a professional for window shade measurements and installation, be sure to provide them with accurate information about your windows, including any special considerations such as obstructions or uneven surfaces. That will help them customize the shades to fit your unique windows. Our team at All About Blinds, Etc. is happy to measure and install your window shades, including (but not limited to):
